Camila Carraro was born on June 29, 1994, in Charlottesville, Virginia, the second child and daughter of Brazilian parents, Victor, a businessman, and Gisele, a flight attendant.
When Mendes was eight years old, her parents divorced and she and her sister were raised by their mother. They lived an immigrant life, moving throughout the southern United States and even living in Brazil for a year.
